Today is the 1st of March, which means that in 30 days, we’ll be jumping in a plane and leaving Chiang Mai, the place we’ve been calling home for the past 3 years in Thailand. It’s going to be a sad departure but we’re looking forward to moving to our new chosen city: Granada, Spain. During the past three years, I’ve been fortunate enough to live in a residence that overlooks the city and has a balcony facing west. My wife must secretly think I’m crazy but I’ve never failed to capture the sunset almost every evening since living here. […]

It’s been a while since we had beautiful sunsets in Chiang Mai, since the beginning of the rainy season this year. I was lucky I grabbed this one just in time while I was shooting something else. The way the sun rays beam up the sky while the sun is setting behind the distant mountains is fantastic. My balcony faces West (obviously) so I get to capture the same angle very often, with the sun behind Doi Suthep mountain overlooking the city. But sometimes, storms creep up from the South, from behind our building. I often miss the scene since […]
Well, Holy Lightning Batman! As I’m writing, there’s another thunderstorm passing over Chiang Mai in Thailand. It’s actually more of a lightning show than rain. My wife warned me there was a storm approaching in the horizon. So I grabbed my camera and my tripod, set it in a dry spot, pointed the camera towards a clutter-free area, set the exposure and focus and started taking shots. This particular one was so fast and bright that I just saw a flash and didn’t notice the lightning until it appeared on my screen. Some of you asked me what settings I […]
We had the smoke season, with ugly dusty skies, no visibility and a barely breathable atmosphere. We had the hot season, with temperatures reaching 40 degrees C (100+ F), cooled down for a few days during Songkran, the water festival. Now we have the rainy season that’s slowly creeping in from the north of Thailand. Cooler temperatures, overcast skies, dramatic clouds and of course: Thunderstorms! Tonight we had a beautiful (but short) lightning show in the sky over Doi Suthep mountain. I placed my tripod outside and shot about 50 shots ranging from 10 to 20 seconds to get lightning […]
Another fiery and dramatic sunset over the city of Chiang Mai in Thailand. Enjoy!
So I guess it’s no secret that I love sunset/sunrise shots. Luckily, I also have an amazing view from my window when I’m working on my desk. Now that the rainy season is over in Chiang Mai, we are having beautiful dramatic sunsets again. I have my tripod set up in my balcony, pointing towards where the sun sets and I decided to take (once again) a few more shots of sky on fire. And just as the sun disappeared behind the clouds for the day, the sky rewarded me with a last little smiley face as a thank you […]
The rainy season shouldn’t be here yet, it usually starts late North of Thailand. However, cloudy skies and thunderstorms decided to invite themselves earlier in Chiang Mai, giving us beautiful skies and dramatic sunsets.
~~oOo~~ Chiang Mai, like most of Thailand, has about 2 seasons: the Hot Season and the Rainy Season (although it gets chillier here in winter). The Rainy Season in Chiang Mai is from around June to October with August and September being the rainiest months. It brings respite from the heat and is a great opportunity for dramatic photos. The season is characterized by torrential downpours in the late afternoon after sunny mornings, but they tend to last just about an hour instead of a steady stream of rain. Often accompanied by a lovely breeze, it cools down the city and makes it more […]
