~~oOo~~ Tian Tan Buddha, also known as Big Buddha is one of the largest outdoor seated bronze Buddha statues in the world. Completed in the 29th of December 1993, on the day of the enlightenment of Gautama Buddha, the 34-meter tall Tian Tan can be almost seen from Macau on a clear day. The name Tian Tan comes from the Altar of Heaven or Earthly Mount of Tian Tan, the Temple of Heaven in Beijing, from which it is modeled. The statue is reached after a long climb of 268 steps. ~~oOo~~ Last year I went to visit China around the South coast. We spent a weekend together in Zhuhai, a prefecture-level city bordering Macau. Zhuhai is in the province of Guangdong, in the Pearl river delta. It is a popular touristic place for the Chinese and is often called the “Chinese Riviera“. On Lantau Island in Hong Kong is one of the 5 biggest Buddha statues in China: The Tian Tan Buddha. The 34 meter high Bronze Buddha statue sits on a lotus throne on a small hill accessed by a long flight of stairs (268 steps). The serene Buddha is also surrounded by six smaller bronze statues of Devas called “The offerings of the 6 Devas”.
