Wat Buppharam, the Sunset Temple ~ Thailand

Wat Buppharam, one of the most beautiful temples in Chiang Mai, Thailand

Wat Buppharam, is one of the most beautiful temples (and probably my favorite) in Chiang Mai, about 500m away from the tourist zone at Tha Phae gate. I think it best shows its glory during sunset when the golden light enhances the warm colors.

The site of Wat Buppharam is of historical importance, as it is from here that in 1797 Chao Kawila took back the city of Chiang Mai after 200 years of Burmese rule.

The temple was built in 1497 by King Phra Muang Kaew on the site of a palace of King Thokarat his Great-Grandfather.

The architecture is a mix of Lanna and Burmese style. The building on the photo is the Ho Monthiantham hall, a new structure completed in 1996. There is also a well nearby which supplies holy water for anointing the King.

The temple is sometimes referred by tourists as the “Donald Duck temple” because of a statue of the same character in the garden in front of the hall. I’ll snap a photo of it later.

Enjoy and thanks for sharing if you like it!

Gladly, some places don’t gather such a commercial throngs of tourist, and thus their holiness is being preserved from the unappreciating eyes of the masses- my favourite places are just like this- places of high energy, rich historical background and marvelous architecture or natural beauty.  Holiday Home

That temple is super beautiful. Have you been to any temples in south India?

    • Thanks for the comment!
No sadly I’ve never been to India yet, but it’s on my list :)

  • Beautiful photo of this temple! I am adding it to my “must visit” list when I come back to Chiang Mai. Did you walk to the temple from the old city gate?

    • Thank you :)
Yes, it’s at walking distance (10min?) from the Eastern Gate (Tha Phae gate).
