The Sun Voyager (Sólfar in Icelandic) is a sculpture by Jón Gunnar Árnason (1931-1989), an Icelandic artist born in Reykjavik.
Built in 1971, It represents a stylish viking ship standing proudly on a polished marble ground by the harbor, reflecting the importance of the sea in Iceland’s culture and history.
The sculpture is one of the biggest tourist attractions in the capital and is not easy to miss as it stands alone by the sea. Sólfar really looks spectacular during the winter time, gleaming under the waning golden rays of the sun.
I also got the chance to see it late at night, in a quiet atmosphere while northern lights danced quietly and gracefully in the sky!
